The lights reflected on Apulia once again as the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year awards took place in Milan at Palazzo Mezzanotte on November 22, 2007.
Among the finalists was Mr. Vito Pertosa, entrepreneur from Monopoli, in the Province of Bari, the only person to represent the regions from South Italy.
Vito Pertosa, President and CEO of MER MEC S.p.A., the largest producer and provider in the world of diagnostic and safety solutions for railway infrastructure, was recognised in the Innovation category "for having become, in little more than 20 years, a point of global reference in the area of safety, diagnostic and asset management solutions for railways".
Selected by an independent jury, the finalists for the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year award, currently held by Piero Bassetti, took part in a round table discussion whose theme was "Winning Strategies: The Italian Way to Innovation".
"This year the award for Entrepreneur of the Year adds excellent nominations to its rich history. Vito Pertosa is a example of the positive values tied to the society, culture and history of our country, which Ernst & Young has always tried to promote", commented Giorgio Mosci, partner of Ernst & Young. "His company's history, rapid growth, together with the ability to create a cultural model make his company an example that values the economy of our Southern Regions".
Created by Ernst & Young in 1986 in the United States, the award ceremony is now present in more than 40 nations, with the goal of recognising the merits of entrepreneurs whose actions, organisation and economic and social development in their home nations has stood out. The winners from every nation then compete internationally for the Ernst & Young World Entrepreneur of the Year Award, an annual event held in Monte Carlo.
The award ceremony first took place in Italy in 1997.
Since then, more than 200 entrepreneurs have been recognised many of which have emerged as figures of entrepreneurial talent, representative of the Italian system, tied to the economic, social and historical values that distinguish it. Every year the winners become members of the Entrepreneur of the Year Association, promoted by Ernst & Young, and they work to develop activities in economic, social and cultural areas, creating a fertile terrain for communications and meetings.
