Wheel Parameters

Wheel Parameters

Wheels are constantly exposed to high mechanical stress and have a decisive influence on the running behavior and general driving comfort.

That is why a regular inspection is needed to ensure operational reliability. As for the rail track, wheel inspection and measurement must include surface and internal flaws detection.

Profile and Diameter

Its robust design guarantees continuous operation even in critical environments, as well as an extended product life. The system can be easily installed on any type of rail-based infrastructure, without modifications to the existing line. All measurement units are enclosed in temperature-controlled carbon-fiber boxes. Shock from passing trains is greatly reduced due to the system's installation on shock absorbing components.

W-INSPECT - Surface Defects Vision Inspection

W-INSPECT is able to automatically inspect wheel sets using high definition cameras and an ad-hoc illuminating system. Defects on the running surface of the wheels, such as shelling, spalling, flat spots, etc., are detected and analyzed by the vision system while the train passes on it. The system acquires the full tread of the wheel during its rolling and automatically analyzes the vision data looking for defects.

Ultrasonic Wheel Flaw Inspection

The wheel inspection systems using ultrasonic technology seeks out flaws and cracks by means of the propagation of Rayleigh ultrasonic waves produced electromagnetically on the rolling surface. The Rayleigh waves propagation through the surface defects determines the development of reflected waves that are automatically identified by the signal acquisition and processing software. The inspection system needs no coupling medium and its performance is independent of the surface conditions of the wheel, allowing proper operation even with rough or dirty surfaces.

Out Of Roundness

The system measures the deviation from an ideally round wheel with high accuracy. The measurements can be performed from a speed of 40 km/h and covers the entire circumference of the wheel in the area where the wheel comes in contact with the track. The measurement system is designed so that at least two wheel blanks (two overruns) are measured for each wheel. The measurement results of a wheel can be generated both numerically and graphically for a specific case. TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS
